Archibshop Seraphim Suspended; Investigative Commission Established
Archbishop Seraphim of Ottawa was suspended yesterday, November 30th, following a special meeting of the Synod of Bishops of the OCA, the OCA website, OCA.org, announced this evening.According to the announcement, which was also sent via email to the clergy of the Archdiocese of Canada, the “… decision was reached after careful deliberations and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Orthodox Church in America mandated in cases of allegations of sexual misconduct.” (You can read the latest information about those allegations, and the Archbishop’s response, in a CTV report here.)
Bishop Irenee of Quebec City has been appointed Administrator of the Archdiocese of Canada, and will now be responsible for all aspects of the hierarchical supervision of the Archdiocese. In addition the Synod mad public the mandate of the new Synodal Commission that will investigate the allegations again Archbishop Seraphim, as well as the OCA’s response to the situation.
