Father Vasile Susan Sends Open Letter to Pokrov.org
Pokrov.org received an open letter from Father Vasile Susan yesterday. The complete text of the letter and all the attachments are linked below.
After again laying out his grievances, Susan addressed the hierarchy of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) and of the Romanian Episcopate directly at the end of the correspondence, and again at the end of each exhibit. Paraphrasing Archbishop Job Osacky, Susan asked if the statements and allegations presented in his open letter and the attachments were true or false?
Susan was terminated from his position at St. Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Church in Chicago, Illinois, in 2004. Archbishop Nathaniel Popp also had the priest removed from the Romanian Episcopate and transferred to the omophorion of the metropolitan. Susan was never given a reason for Popp’s actions. Although he remains a priest in good standing, Susan has been without church employment since 2004. According to Susan, the OCA bishops have ignored Susan’s appeals for a hearing on this matter for six years.
The OCA bishops will meet in Colorado Springs from April 26th through the 29th. It remains to be seen whether they will now take up this case and respond to Susan’s challenging words.
