Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Metropolis of Atlanta.
In a letter dated February 26, 2015, Saint George’s priest, Father Anthony Stratis, told parishioners that their former treasurer, Constantine Christodoulou, had stolen money from the parish, estimated at the time to be $360,000. The letter went on to say that no criminal charges had been filed, but that Christodoulou had agreed to repay the funds.
On April 27, 2015, WBIR reported that criminal charges had been filed against Christodoulou and that an updated tally had found that $400,950 in church funds were missing.
A few months after the thefts were made public, on April 12th, a fire heavily damaged the sanctuary of the church. The parish had planned to install a smoke alarm. WBIR reported that church members said they were told by Christodoulou that the alarm was too costly.
