HOCNA Holy Orthodox Church of North America

The Holy Orthodox Church of North America (HOCNA)separated itself from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) in the late 1980s. ROCOR had suspended Archimandrite Panteleimon Metropoulos in 1986 in the wake of serious moral charges. Metropoulos was a monk at Holy Transfiguration Monastery (HTM) in Brookline, Massachusetts. However, before the investigation into the moral charges could be completed, HTM accused ROCOR of having heretically departed from the teaching of the Orthodox Church by professing ecumenism. In response, the ROCOR Synod of Bishops declared that Archimandrite Panteleimon and the clergymen aligned with him had deposed themselves. The monastery and its followers then formed a new jurisdiction, HOCNA.
