St. Matthew House (SMH) in Columbia, Maryland, is a non-profit corporation which owns and operates a home for adults with physical disabilities in Columbia. The venture is now a separate legal entity, but it was originally developed as a ministry of St. Matthew Church (SMC), which is a parish of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), Diocese of Washington and New York.
Mrs. Kristine Patico Koumentakos, a parishioner at SMC, was employed as the executive director of SMH. The priest assigned to SMC, Fr. Raymond Velencia, was on SMH Board of Directors (BOD).
On May 1, 2008, Mrs. Koumentakos and her husband, Nicholas Koumentakos, filed a lawsuit against Metropolitan Herman (Swaiko), the OCA, the Diocese of Washington and New York, Fr. Raymond, SMC, SMH and the SMH BOD. The action alleged employment discrimination and retaliation. In addition, the suit contended that Fr. Raymond had breached the seal of confession to embarass and harm the couple.
