Archimandrite Gerasimos Makris is a priest in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Amercia (GOA), Archdiocesan District. Until January of 2018 he worked at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, New York.
Makris was accused of engaging in sexual misconduct with two adult women, one in Massachusetts and one in Brooklyn. According to a letter dated February 2, 2018, and addressed to the Holy Cross Community, Makris admitted to having “inappropriate relations” with both.
As provided in the GOA sexual misconduct policy, the priest was suspended on January 18, 2018, pending a complete investigation. The National Herald reported that Makris had been sent to Saint Luke’s Institute in Maryland for evaluation. The institute specializes in assessing and treating clergy who engage in sexual misconduct.
The archimandrite was on the list of those put forth to become metropolitan of the Chicago Diocese when the allegations were made public.
