Archimandrite Timothy Bakakos was the priest at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Oak Lawn, Illinois until 2006. The parish belongs to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Metropolis of Chicago. Following allegations of financial impopriety in 2005, Bakakos was transferred to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago.
Although the Metropolis cleared Bakakos of any wrongdoing, a small group of parishioners remained unconvinced. Bakakos’ successor at St. Nicholas, Fr. John Artemas, had these parishioners banned from the church property. Artemas had one of these parishioners, Emmanuel Papadopoulos, arrested for criminal trespass in 2008, when Papadopoulos attended his aunt’s memorial service. Papadopoulos was subsequently convicted.
