Archpriest Branislav Peranovic is a priest in the Serbian Orthodox Church. He ran a Church affiliated rehabilitation center for drug addicts called Crna Reka. The center is located near Novi Pazar, Serbia.
In 2009, officials in Serbia began investigating the center after an alleged video of a patient beating surfaced. The video, published by Vreme magazine, shows a man assaulting an alleged patient by hitting him with a shovel and punching his face. There are icons in the background of the video.
Peranovic reportedly told B92 television that a “heavy hand” was needed. “Whoever has a junkie in the house knows what I am talking about.”
The hierarch who had oversight of the center, Bishop Artemije Radosavljevic, subsequently removed Peranovic from his position.
However, Peranovic remained a clergyman, and opened up another rehabilitation center. In August of 2012 the priest beat an addict to death at this new facility. As a result, Peranovic was sentenced to 20 years in prison for second-degree murder on June 21, 2013.
