Father Andre A. Matthews is a priest with the Romanian Catholic Diocese of Saint George in Canton, Ohio. He was the pastor of Saint Helena Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1990 until his resignation in 2011.
In September of 2011 Matthews faced a criminal investigation into misappropriation of parish funds. In response, the diocese gave the priest on a leave of absence. The clergyman then voluntarily resigned from his position at Saint Helena, and the diocese accepted his resignation.
In June of 2013 Matthews pleaded guilty to charges that he stole $176,000 from Saint Helena. Subsequently, on July 17th, the priest also pleaded guilty to misappropriating more than $100,000 from an elderly parishioner. Following these admissions of guilt, on July 18th, the clergyman was suspended from the priesthood. Matthews will remain suspended until a final decision on his case is made in spiritual court.
Matthews was sentenced to 2 years in prison for his crimes on October 30, 2013. The judge also ordered that he make restitution to the church and to the parishioner.
