Father John Soucek

Father John Soucek was a priest in the Orthodox Church in America (OCA). However, he was removed from the ranks of OCA clergy effective October 22, 2014. Although the OCA did not give a reason for this action, on June 25, 2013, Soucek, along with the OCA and Saint Innocent Orthodox Church in Tarzana, Californa, was sued for the sexual abuse of a minor female child (13 years of age).

According to the complaint, the abuse occurred circa 2000, when Soucek was an ordained reader and choir director at Saint Innocent. At the time, Soucek was married and a father. Also according to the complaint, Soucek sent an inappropriate email to the child expressing a romantic interest in her. The email was inadvertently sent to other members of the parish. The child complained and brought the email to the attention of the parish priest, Father Gregory Safchuk, who did nothing. Subsequently, the child was abused by Soucek on at least three occasions. In addition, the complaint alleged that there were other victims at the Tarzana parish.

Soucek is the son of an Orthodox priest, Father Pavel Soucek. Following his time at Saint Innocent’s, Soucek attended Saint Tikhon’s Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania. The OCA’s Diocese of the West (DOW) sent monthly donations to support Soucek while he was at the seminary in 2006.

Soucek was ordained a deacon on July 9th, 2006, by Metropolitan (then Bishop) Tikhon Mollard on behalf of Metropolitan Herman Swaiko. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 21, 2007.

The Tarzana parish belongs to the DOW. Following his ordination, Soucek worked as a priest at Saint Michael Church in Old Forge, Pennsylvania. Saint Michael belongs to the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania.
