Father Sasoon Vartabed Zumrookhdian is a priest in the Armenian Apostolic Church.

In 2016 Zumrookhdian was appointed to lead Saint Geragos Armenian Apostolic Church in Las Vegas by Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. The parish belongs to the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America.

In 1993 Zumrookhdian was working at Saint Paul Armenian Church in Fresno, which is also in the Western Diocese, when Karen King filed an internal complaint with Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, who headed the diocese at the time. The complaint requested that Hovsepian suspend Zumrookhdian pending an internal investigation into King’s claims that the priest had engaged in sexual misconduct with her, an Armenian communicant who was under the priest’s pastoral care.

According to a lawsuit that was filed later that year against Zumrookhdian, Hovsepian, and the diocese, the archbishop did not properly investigate this complaint and he never suspended the priest.

The suit also alleged that Zumrookhdian had been denied ordination in the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church because while working in that diocese as an assistant “he engaged in promiscuous relations with female parish communicants.” It was further alleged that Hovsepian ordained Zumrookhdian despite having knowledge of this history.

The lawsuit asked for unspecified damages for King’s emotional distress, defamation, battery and other complaints.

Zumrookhidian denied the allegations made by King. His attorney said at the time that the priest wanted his day in court.

The case was resolved on January 13, 1995, with a confidential settlement agreement.

Four years later Zumrookhdian was removed from Saint Paul’s by Hovsepian. No reason was given for this action, although at the time the priest and the head of parish council, told the media that they did not believe it had anything to do with King’s lawsuit.

Zumrookhdian was the celebrant during a liturgy commemorating the establishment of the first Armenian church in 2010. According to article, he was the “Vicar of the Pontifical Legate of Western Europe for Spain and Portugal.”

In 2014, Zumrookhdian was one of three candidates for the position of primate of the Diocese of Canada of the Armenian Church of North America. He was not selected.
