Father Sotirios Papadopoulos is a priest at the Church of the Virgin Mary in the west Athens area of Ilion. The sixty year old priest was arrested on December 14, 2007, and charged with multiple counts of rape.
Papadopoulos was alleged to be a customer of a mother who was forcing her minor daughter (age 11) and another girl (age 8) to work as sex slaves. Among the charges against the priest was the accusation that he had sex with one of the girls inside a chapel two years ago.
According to information that Pokrov received that was not carried in the English coverage of this case, Papadopoulos’ two co-priests and two coaches full of parishioners came to where the clergyman was being held to give the accused priest courage. The clergyman’s supporters did not believe that he was guilty of the charges.
Papadopoulos was convicted in February of 2010 and sentenced to 24 years in prison.
