Gary Michael Sabino was convicted on August 5, 2005, of abusing 3 girls, ages 6, 8 and 10, during an overnight stay at his home in Holiday, Florida. The assaults occurred in 2001. Sabino received 2 life sentences and 2 thirty year sentences following this conviction. He died in prison in 2011.
When the 3 girls stayed with Sabino, he took them to Saint Gregory’s Russian Orthodox Church in Tampa, a parish of the Moscow Patriarchate. The priest there at the time, Father Steven Sunderland, was a former member of the Holy Order of MANS who studied theology at Christ of the Hills Monastery (COTH) in Blanco, Texas.
Prior to charges being filed on behalf of the 3 sisters, Sabino was arrested for fondling a 9-year-old girl. He was charged and released on bail in January, 2003. Sabino then disappeared.
The Orthodox layman was finally apprehended in the fall of 2004 at COTH. Sunderland acknowledged helping Sabino secure bail and an attorney, but he denied having any part in his flight to the monastery.
