James Wright lived at the Christ of the Hills Monastery in Blanco Texas for a time when he was a minor. At that time the monastery belonged to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).
In 2006 Wright alleged that 5 monks had abused him sexually during his sojourn at the facility. Two of those monks, Father Jeremiah Hitt and Father Benedict Greene, the monastery’s founder, had previously been convicted of abusing an 11 year old “novice” in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
Criminal charges were filed against Hitt, Greene, the monastery’s abbot, Vasili Hughes, Father Pangratios Christley and Father Tikhon Fallon as a result of Wright’s allegations. All were ultimately convicted, with the exception of Greene, who committed suicide.
Wright also filed a civil suit against the corporation which owned the COTH property, Ecumenical Monks, and ROCOR. Both entities agreed to a settlement.
