James C. Spencer is an attorney with the law firm of Hinkle Elkouri in Wichita, Kansas. Spencer represented Reader Paul Sidebottom in the formal complaint Sidebottom filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in February of 2008.
Sidebottom’s complaint alleged sexual harassment by Archimandrite Isidore Brittain, and retaliatory discharge by Bishop Nikolai Soraich. Brittain and Soraich were, respectively, the chancellor and hierarch of the Diocese of Alaska when the harassment and retaliation occurred. The diocese belongs to the Orthodox Church in America (OCA).
The Sidebottom complaint was settled in December of 2008. Reportedly, that settlement mandated revision of the OCA’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. Since at least August, 2009, Spencer has participated in meetings of the OCA’s Sexual Misconduct Policy Advisory Committee, which is examining and updating the guidelines.
