James Jerome Larkin is a Greek Orthodox layman and a career educator. Most recently he was employed as principal at Tampa Day School, in Tampa, Florida. He is married and the father of two children.
In April of 2014 Larkin was charged with lewd molestation of a child aged twelve or older. The fourteen year old boy who made the allegations was a former student at Tampa Day. During the investigation, a recorded call was made between Larkin and the victim. Authorities say that during that call Larkin admitted to the allegations and said that his actions were inappropriate.
Larkin was terminated by Tampa Day after his arrest. He had been employed by the school for five years.
Prior to working at Tampa Day, Larkin was headmaster at Saint John Greek Orthodox Day School, also in Tampa, from 1978 to 2009. He resigned from this position.
Another victim came forward in August of 2014, saying that Larkin had abused him in 1980, when he was only ten years old. That victim was a student at the Greek Orthodox school. Larkin was then charged with a second crime, capital sexual battery on a child under the age of twelve.
Larkin was denied bail on December 17, 2014. At the hearing prosecutors said that another victim had come forward and stated that Larkin had sexually abused him in 1976. This victim also attended Saint John. No charges were filed in that case because it was beyond the statute of limitations. The victim told his father about the molestation at the time, but his father did not believe him then.
Prosecutors also told the court on the 17th that Larkin had sent text messages to an underage boy after he was released on bail in April. In the messages, Larkin appeared to admit to molesting that child as well.
Larkin was sentenced on April 30, 2015, to ten years in prison as part of a plea deal. He admitted to sexually abusing two adolescent boys and pleaded guilty to one count of lewd molestation and one count of attempted sexual battery.
The former educator will be on probation for ten years following his release from prison. In addition, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
Also, the family of the fourteen year old victim has hired sex abuse attorney Adam Horowitz (800-400-1098, 954-524-2820) to pursue a civil suit against Larkin. On April 12, 2016, a lawsuit was filed against Tampa Day School and Larkin.
Larkin at one time taught fourth grade at Carrollwood Elementary School in Tampa.
In addition, the educator was past vice president of the Florida Kindergarten Council, former board member of the Florida Council of Independent Schools, and past president of the Bay Area Council of Independent Schools.
