Metropolitan Savas Zembillas is a bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOA). He heads the GOA’s Metropolis of Pittsburgh.
Prior to becoming a metropolitan, Zembillas served as the chancellor of the GOA.
Zembillas was also the “Policy Implementer and Resource Person” for the GOA’s Sexual Misconduct Advisory Board. The biography issued in conjunction with that position said:
“Bishop Savas (Zembillas) was appointed Chancellor of the Archdiocese by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America in December 1999. A forty-seven-year-old native of Gary, Indiana, he earned degrees in Philosophy and English literature from Colby College (1979) and a Master’s in Divinity from Holy Cross School of Theology (1985), and pursued doctoral studies at Pembroke College, Oxford University (1987-94), under the supervision of His Grace Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia. Prior to his appointment as Chancellor, he served communities in Cincinnati, Ohio (lay assistant, 1985- 87), Oxford (Deacon, 1991-94), Kalamazoo, Michigan (Proistamenos, 1995-97) and Merrick, New York (1997-2000). He was elevated to the episcopacy in 2002 and is, in his capacity as Chancellor and in accordance with the Archdiocesan Policy on Clergy Sexual Misconduct, the principal investigator of misconduct complaints.”
