Patriarch Bartholomew I (Demetrios Archontonis) is the ruling hierarch of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Constantinople is one of the ancient Orthodox Patriarchates, and its ruling bishop is given the title of “Ecumenical Patriarch” because he is considered to be “the first among equals” of all Orthodox bishops.
