Terenty Dushkin attended St. Herman of Alaska Seminary in Kodiak, Alaska, during the fall semester of 2003. St. Herman is one of three seminaries of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA).

According to Bishop Nikolai (Soraich), the ruling hierarch of the OCA’s Diocese of Alaska, Dushkin was expelled from the seminary in December of 2003, “because he did not follow certain rules required of all students.” The bishop did not specify which rules were broken.

Dushkin applied for readmission to the seminary. However, before a decision could be made on his application, he was arrested and charged with 11 sex crimes.

Dushkin was 22 years old at the time of his arrest in July of 2004. In nine of the felony charges against him, he was accused of having sexual contact with girls between the ages of 13 and 15. Some of the charges dated back to 2002, while the most recent was alleged to have occurred in June of 2004.
Two additional felonies alleged that Dushkin had videotaped sex scenes with a 17-year-old girl.

Dushkin was convicted on three of the counts on May 5, 2005, as set forth below, and served his time in a corrections facility. The court documents from the three cases can be found under “related articles” on the right. Additional information may be obtained from the Alaskan sex offender registry. A link to the registry is also provided on the right.

According to the official website of the Diocese of Alaska, Dushkin was tonsured a reader at St. Innocent Cathedral in Anchorage by Bishop Nikolai on December 9, 2007. Several days later, on December 14, the new reader applied for a marriage license.

Although a reader is the first rank or order of the priesthood, in the lower 48 the position has a relatively minor role to play in the liturgical life of the Church. However, in Alaska, many parishes do not have a priest. The reader then assumes an important role in the local religious community. He will baptize new members, and conduct the majority of the services. A reader in Alaska not only has the aura of authority, but in the remote villages he will have the respect and status normally reserved for a priest.

On January 21, 2008, Orthodox Christians for Accountability reported that Protodeacon George Nelson had been suspended by Bishop Nikolai after the tonsure of Reader Terenty, when the protodeacon told the bishop that he could not serve him any longer. Bishop Nikolai advised the protodeacon that a spiritual court would be convened to determine Fr. George’s fate.

On February 5, 2008, there was an announcement on the website of the Orthodox Church in America concerning Reader Terenty. The press release said that the reader was suspended on January 17, 2008 “in accordance with the holy Canons and in concurrence with the ruling bishop of the Diocese of Alaska.” However, a picture published on the diocesan website appears to show Reader Terenty, vested as a subdeacon, participating in Theophany services at the Anchorage cathedral on January 19.

A check of the Alaska sex offender registry on February 5, 2008, showed that Reader Terenty, who had been unemployed, had a job. The reader was working at the Russian Orthodox Museum in Anchorage. The museum operates under the auspices of the Diocese of Alaska. A subsequent check, on June 28, 2008, showed that Reader Terenty was again unemployed.
