Samuel David Allen is a career pedophile who has molested boys and girls of all ages. Court records show that Allen began abusing children while he was still a juvenile himself.

Allen testified in a deposition that he joined the Holy Order of MANS in the late 1960s, while the group was still a Gnostic, New Age cult. Allen continued his association with the Order as it evolved into Christ the Saviour Brotherhood (CSB). Members of this group referred to Allen as “Brother Sam.”

Allen received his first adult conviction while he was living in England in the early 1970s. This conviction was for molesting a 13 year old girl. After Allen completed his sentence, he was deported to the United States.

Allen was convicted for the second time in Marin County, California, in 1983. This conviction was based on 2 entirely separate incidents involving 2 different children, an 8 year old girl and a 7 year old boy. The Marin County probation report noted that Allen was also facing charges of abusing a 5 year old girl in Humboldt County, California.

Over the objections of the Marin County prosecutor, the court sentenced Allen to 3 years in state prison, but released him on parole. Humboldt County elected not to prosecute its case.

Allen’s parole was revoked in 1987, when he was charged with molesting 3 additional children in Marin County, a 7 year old boy, a 9 year old girl, and an 11 year old girl. Four of the 13 charges alleged that Allen used force to commit the assaults. Although Allen admitted the charges, he was not convicted for these crimes. Instead, his parole was revoked and he was sent to state prison to complete the 3 year sentence he received in 1983.

Allen was released from prison in the spring of 1989. However, he was still on probation and required to register as a sex offender.

In July of 1989 Allen began attending services at Holy Trinity Cathedral (HTC) in San Francisco. While at the cathedral he told some people that his name was Symeon and others that it was Michael.

Although Allen was living in San Francisco, he registered as a sex offender using a friend’s Marin County address. This was a violation of his probation.

Allen was chrismated at HTC on November 17, 1990, by Father George Sondergaard. His baptismal name was Michael. Records at the cathedral listed only one godparent, Mother Johanna Seiferlein. However, in court records from December of 1990, Allen indicated that Brother David Finkelstein (now Father Dorotheos of the Serbian Orthodox Church) was his godfather.

At the time Allen attended HTC, the cathedral was a parish of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), Diocese of San Francisco and the West. The ruling hierarch was Bishop Tikhon Fitzgerald, although the bishop did not reside in San Francisco and only served at HTC on rare occasions.

Allen was arrested in December of 1990 for molesting a child, a 7 year old girl, in Marin County on November 29, and December 6, 1990. Allen was working at the College of Marin at the time, and the assault took place on that campus. He pleaded guilty to some of those charges later that year.

During his 1991 sentencing hearing, Allen claimed that he had a monastic vocation. His attorney argued that if Allen joined a monastery he would escape from his temptation to molest children. Allen presented support for this alternative from 4 people.

The probation file contained a letter from Abbot Gabriel Loynes, a letter from Abbot Herman Podmoshensky, a letter from a “Brother Christopher,” and a letter from Finkelstein, Allen’s Orthodox godfather. Finkelstein also testified on Allen’s behalf at the sentencing hearing.

Despite the letters in the probation file and Finkelstein’s testimony, the judge sentenced Allen to fifteen years in prison.

Allen was also accused of molesting several children at HTC in 1991. Police reports were filed on behalf of 4 children, two 4 year old girls, a 4 year old boy, and a 6 year old girl. It was alleged that the abuse began in 1989, when the younger children were 2 and the older child was 4. When Allen was questioned about the HTC charges, he denied them. San Francisco County declined to prosecute.

Allen was due to be released from prison in 1999. However, Marin County filed a civil commitment proceeding against him. In the spring of 1999, a jury found Allen to be a Sexually Violent Predator. He was committed to the state mental institution in Atascadero, California, where he remains.

A summary of the known criminal and civil cases involving Allen is set forth below. Links to those documents available on Pokrov.org from these actions are also provided.
