Priest accused of molesting teenage boy
DURHAM — A priest at a Greek Orthodox church in Durham was arrested Tuesday on charges that he molested a 15-year-old boy two years ago.
Father Angelo H. Kasemeotes, 64, of 11-C Post Oak Road, was charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
Kasemeotes is a priest at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church on Watts Street.
Police said the alleged offenses took place at the priest’s home and did not involve members of the congregation.
“It involves a juvenile from the neighborhood,” said Capt. E.E. Sarvis of the Durham Police Department. “The case had nothing whatsoever to do with the church.”
Police said the offenses happened twice, sometime between May and July of 1990. Investigators would not elaborate on what happened.
Apparently the teenager, who was 15 at the time, came forward recently. “This is the only complaint we’ve received,” Sarvis said. “If we receive other complaints then we will investigate them. Sometimes that happens when something like this becomes public.”
The case will be handled by the state Attorney General’s Office because Durham County District Attorney Ronald L. Stephens is a member of the church.
Stephens said he wanted to avoid any possible conflict of interest, so he turned the case over to the Attorney General’s Office.
“My family and I are members and I have attended the church even before he was priest there,” Stephens said.
The district attorney would not comment further on the case. He said Kasemeotes has been at the church for about three years.
