A Russian Orthodox priest forced a teenage boy to drink alcohol before he climbed on top of him in bed at his Sydney church flat, a jury has been told.
In a recorded interview with police the teenager also said when he tried to push Stanislav Vakhabov away, the priest would tell him ‘you behave like a pig, you are selfish’.
The interview was played in the Downing Centre District Court on Thursday at the trial of Vakhabov, also known as Father Christopher who has pleaded not guilty to detaining the then 14-year-old for his own sexual gratification, giving him intoxicating substances to make it easier to have unlawful sexual activity and four counts of indecent assault.
The boy, from overseas, said Vakhabov, 35, got in touch on a Russian social media site and began chatting to him before inviting him to Australia in 2014.
Speaking through a Russian interpreter in the interview, the teenager said he ‘never really cried before he came to Australia’, but towards the end of his trip he ‘was always crying and had a breakdown’.
On the first night the priest gave the teenager beer and wine to drink and tried to cuddle him, he said.
Vakhabov reassured him that it was nothing out of the ordinary, telling him that at ‘his monastery it was how monks would show that they had no bad thoughts to each other’.
Although the priest previously said the teenager would sleep on the couch, when the boy arrived he told him they would share the bed but not touch each other.
The teen said he had never tried alcohol but the accused pressured him by saying that if he didn’t drink then he would tell his mother back in Russia that he had drunk alcohol before.
The priest often tried to hug him and also kissed him on the mouth, climbed on top of him, tried to take his shirt off and touched his genitals, the teenager told the court.
When trying to take off the boy’s tracksuit pants he broke the waistband elastic trying to pull them off, he said.
The trial is continuing.
