Updates from the Fall of 2009
Father Andrew L. J. James was released from prison on September 28, 2009. He is registered as a sex offender in the state of Ohio under his legal name, Lawrence James. James was a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) in Columbus, Ohio, prior to his conviction in 2001 for the kidnapping and attempted rape of a 10 year old boy.
Father Jeremiah Hitt was also released from prison in the fall of 2009. He is registered as a sex offender in the state of Texas under his legal name, Jonathan Irving Hitt. Hitt was also a priest in ROCOR prior to his conviction by jury trial for the sexual abuse of an 11 year old novice at Christ of the Hills Monastery in Blanco, Texas. Hitt pleaded guilty to assaulting another 11 year old at COTH in February of 2009. However, by the terms of the plea agreement, he was not sentenced to serve any additional time.
The lawsuit filed by an unidentified nineteen year old woman who alleged that Father Anthony Moschonas had sexually assaulted her during a trip to Greece was apparently settled this fall. Pima County, New Mexico, court records showed that a “Notice Of Settlement/Offer” was filed in the case of Doe v. Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on October 9, 2009. A court notice for “In Chambers Notice Of Pending Dismissal” followed on October 14th. As of early December the case no longer appeared on the Pima County court site, so no doubt it been settled to the benefit of the plaintiff.
